“A Call from the Woods” (c. 5′) was commissioned, premiered, and recorded by Brazilian violist Amaro Dubois. Imagine standing in a forest, playing your viola all alone, calling out to nature and all that surrounds you. In this work, you will create a conversation between two voices in the first section. One begins a bit more skitterish than the other and becomes stronger in voice until it breaks into a fast dance. That is followed by an optional freely improvised section which ends in the introspection of the beginning.
“Since my favorite place is smack dab in the middle of a damp forest, I hope to share some of that depth of beauty with you along with a touch of Memphis’s country fiddling and a freely improvised cadenza.” Judith Markovich
“Markovich’s musical cohesion and Dubois’ superior stylistic interpretation combine into an easy listening of a great new work for viola.” Brutal New Music Reviews
Ideas for the improvisational section are demonstrated brilliantly in Dubois’ recording, available on all streaming platforms and YouTube.
